How being in a band, is like being married...

There's many similarities being in a band and being married. Being in a band is kinda like being married. I'm not talking about having multiple spouses. But, the interaction that you have with others. Here's a list of some similarities:

Compromise - In both situations you have to be able to compromise. For the band, there's song selections, where you gig, what you get paid, how it's split.

Communication - In both situations, communication is key. For the band, communication is so important, since it is required so you can schedule practices, gigs, adjust volume, and know what each band mate is tasked with.

Money - In both situations money can be a deciding factor on how things move forward. For the band, establishing when gigs are gratis, how much to charge, who collects the fee, who gets the hit on taxes, when do band mates get paid for services.

Establishing what you bring to the table - In both situations, you have to understand and accept what each person brings to the table. For the band, each person should know what their strengths and weaknesses and these should be communicated to all band members.

So, now you been playing an instrument or singing for a long time. And you're thinking, it's time to get out there and perform. Keep these points in mind, and remember, above all...have fun!
